Data Visualization

Image
If there is one thing I can say about about data visualization, it's that the concept is easy to grasp but difficult to execute. It requires some level of creativity but at the same time you have to remain factual and grounded to reasoning. However it's important to keep in mind that the creativity is meant for the data to be visually appealing and understandable. In addition I also had to use text in my data visualization in order to give the displayed data it's context. I decided to use pictographs of men with suitcases since they're simple and are commonly used in airports. The pictographs obviously depict a traveler/immigrant. Of course I made sure I used a reliable source before creating what I like to call "a Picto-man graph." I used the colors of the top 10 countries flags to make the data look more intriguing instead of using a standard single colored bar. I also had to be consistent and accurate for the proportions of each country when it came to th...

Social Justice Design Research

My Muse (Inspiration) My muse for my Social Justice Project is Bruce Timm, who is the animator and creator of Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League and abundant installments of the DC Animated Universe. HIs art direction is beyond stellar, it's fascinating how he can perfectly set a scene, and the scene alone without audio is more than enough for the audience to observe what is going on. His phenomenal movie "Batman Mask Of The Phantasm" has compelling animation which amplifies the magnificent story telling. Bruce's emotional journey and eventually finding the closure to his depression and dilemma. I constantly go back to his work just to see episodes of series he has directed to admire the effort seen in his work. Bruce Timm's characters, his remarkable direction and animation cannot be "done" again.  It's a once in a life-time master piece we will ever get to see.  It's similar to the work of other great ...

Social Justice

Municipal Homelessness      I consider this social issue one that I am close to because I just see it so frequently on the media and even in my home country Bolivia. They live in homes that I can't consider to be homes at all (hay tents or houses using blankets and sticks for sheltering). Just last night on CNN, me and my father were watching the life of people in Sudan. In summary, it wasn't better than the life that is present in Bolivia. I'm even writing a MLA paper on the Municipal Homelessness in NYC. To add on to the turmoil, no one seems to be addressing this problem. Even if there are organizations like the Office of Civil Justice and the HPA here in the city, it's still disregarded.   Let's consider how the government generously provides for newly arriving immigrants and refugees, but does not do the same for New Yorkers who have been forced from their homes or who are at risk of eviction.  What I can bring into the discussion are potential  soluti...

What is Editorial Design?

Video - Editorial Design is when design is focused communication, communication, and commercial aspects of a publication .Two highlights of editorial design is the grid which layouts the structure on a page and the consistency of elements on each page. The reader should be able to instantly figure out the hierarchy of a reading ( brochure, book, magazine, and so on ). An inconsistent layout confuses and becomes arduous for the reader to be able to read what is on a page. If you want the reader to take a pause to think or reflect after reading a very text hefty section, you could add a full bleed photo (expands onto two periods). In comparison to logo design, logo design focuses on immediate communication while editorial design communicates through multiple pages . The first books layout adheres to the rules to enable the reader to focus on the content in a page. The second book's layout is provocative with it's playful images and the grid being flip depending on the side...

Communication Design

Communication Design have a variety of channels such as websites ,social media, email, or print. Media are the formats that you use to communicate your message that you're trying to convey to the audience. This can be done via text, images, videos, audio, or interactive elements. It's best to select the channels and media that best suit your objectives . Editorial design plays a crucial role in presenting information and communicating ideas in communication design. This is shown in magazines, newspapers, books, brochures or e-books. This is because a well designed layout makes reading more enjoyable and accessible. It organizes content through hierarchy (an organizing system that is oriented by the importance of individual aspects. Editorial design is pivotal when it comes to building a visual identity of a publication or brand. This involves the choices of color, typography, images, spacing, proximity, and alignment. Of course using a grid lays out the foundation of e...
