Data Visualization at the Designing Peace Exhibition

Data Visualization is the graphical representation of information and data that is used to convey a message to the reader(s).  The three primary visualizations of data are pie charts, bar graphs, and maps. The goal of Data Visualization is to make data simple and digestible for the audience to understand. The reader(s)/audience needs to understand the data being displayed in order for them to identify the trend and story of the information. The Cooper Hewit exhibition that caught my eye was the durable peace. Mainly because it has a monochrome map with a standout color that is supposed to outline something substantial. The point of the exhibition is to imply how design helps transitions from instability to peace. How can we establish a long term and transformative peace that benefits all divisions of society. I planned on using a map for my data visualization however with my own twist. It uses imagery of the Israel-Palestine area and pin pointing a specific location to indicate where peace must be established. I can use my graphic design skills by using fundamental elements such as contrast, hierarchy , typography and repetition to clearly represent the trend going on and the message I want to convey to the viewer(s). Typography plays an imperative role in legibility and providing a certain tone to make the audience feel a certain mood. Repetition indicates sections of the data that are important, especially that in data/trends will most likely be repeated through out the data. What I will do to improve my previous data visualization is either changing the idea or using more design elements. Originally I was using Picto-Men to represent the data of homeless population however now I plan using different symbols or a colored map of percentage of homelessness throughout the 5 boroughs. I would use  a complementary color palette for the five boroughs if I decide to use to the map.
